BARIŞ K
Barış K's been one of the major forces in Istanbul nightlife since the late 90's. Born in Istanbul to an ideally set environment to trigger his innate potential for music. His father being an semi-professional Turkish Art musician collecting records of varied genres, from traditional Turkish music to disco, Mediterranean pop to new wave and older brother’s acid house and classical rock music tapes created a wide spectrum of sounds from orient to occident.
His first experiment with music was a home made black metal cover of the oriental theme song of Anthony Quinn movie, The Message, which became a super mystic hit in Turkey at the time in 1994. He recorded several atmospheric, monotone, garage black metal demos in the following years, playing keys, bass and vocal in his bands.
First disc jockeying experiences also took place during this period at various rock-bars, mixing a selection of metal, hardcore and punk until he started as a waiter in legendary jazz cafe Gizli Bahçe in 1996, where he got behind the decks next year with a set of brit pop, post rock, noise, electronica, trip hop, break beat and trance. At times he played 7 days a week, 12 hours a day, which was a good chance for him to develop mixing skills.
Meantime in 1999, he realized his first one-man show at the punk rock club Captain Hook, singing Electro Arabesk tunes pre-recorded at his first home studio that consisted of an Atari 1040, running an archaic version of Cubase and a Yamaha keyboard with midi capabilities.
Later with his late fellow dj İsmet, they started a series of soul, funk, rare groove parties and produced the radio show “Satürn” on Açık Radyo for around 7 years, focusing deeply into underground hip hop and its roots into black music history. Duo also worked together at Istanbul’s underground indie record store and record label Kod Müzik and dj’ed at the label’s break beat parties. By 2001, he was the resident at the legendary Istanbul club, (((godet)))’s 2nd floor lounge, Red Room, which used to run as a fashion boutique in the 70's, with its art deco design untouched.
In 2007, his Eurasia Mixes, which are a series of original and eclectic mixes, focusing intensely on Turkey's hidden psychedelic funk-disco-folk music, featured on http://www.alainfinkielkrautrock.com/ ,http://lovefingers.org/ and http://www.beatsinspace.net/ and received him global acclaim. Same year he released an instrumental synth-folk remix, “Oyun Havasi”, a collaboration with clarinet player Hüsnü Şenlendirici, on Doublemoon Records, Istanbul. His first solo release "Show You Love", with his notable falsetto vocals came out on Mad Bros Records, Paris in 2008, which is a good example of his multi-layered musical universe. Later in 2011, his Eurasia edits were released in “Istanbul 70“ compilation on Nublu Records, New York, propelling him into the premier league of dance music.
Barış is one of the co-founders of (((godet)))’s predecessor, Mini Muzikhol club in Istanbul. He still holds a 24 years residency at Gizli Bahçe, Nevizade. He is also a co-curator of the Anapop festival that staged performances of the 60's-70's Turkish Psychedelic bands as well as new generation of psyche-folk rock musicians. In 2012, his remix for Pollyester’s “Voices” came out on Permanent Vacation, Munich.
Barış is also one of the two core members of the Istanbul based acid-folk jam band, Insanlar. Their first 12” vinyl release, “Kime Ne”, came out on Barış’ own electro-folk label Aboov Plak in December 2013 in Istanbul.
Later followed by his first single “200” with his own vocals on Emotional Especial records London alongside Andrew Weatherall’s Asphodell remixes, deep house and minimal works “Chapter I” on Field Works compilation on Vox Populi records Germany and “Satir” on Ararat compilation on Ararat Masis records Germany, a re-run of Insanlar’s “Kime Ne” with Ricardo Villalobos remixes on Honest Jon’s label London, “Demedim Mi” the second release of Insanlar on RushHour records Amsterdam and remix works for Khidja’s “Drums of Taksim” with Mehmet Aslan on Malka Tuti records Germany, Ayyuka’s “Baba” on Shalgam records Turkey, Sezen Aksu’s “Yeni Kalanlar” with Dj Moguz, Menachem 26’s Klob Yasemin on Ladino Romance, Erol Alkan’s Spectrum on Phantasy Sound label London, Kit and Sebastian’s “Durma” on Mr.Bongo records London and another Insanlar live concert recording “Leleo” on Stamp The Wax label. And recently Barış released his first electronic solo Ep on frankfurt's legendary club Robert Johnson's own label in 2022
All depending on time, line-up and crowd, disco re-edits, house and techno music finds its way into K's DJ-bag.
